Who is this guy? Roy was considered the Astros' #1 prospect in 2001...that was before he was called up to the Big Leagues in order to take over as their ace. He had been pitching in Single-A Kissimmee in 2000, when he was called up for what was supposed to be one emergency start. However, he threw a 15-strikeout shutout, and was never sent back down. On the season, he finished with a 11-4 record at Double-A Round Rock, with a 1.94 ERA, 141 K's, and only 22 BB's in 130 innings of work.
To start 2001, Roy made the Big League club outright. He has looked as dominating as any pitcher in the game at times, and came close to winning the 2001 Cy Young award (falling short to the awesome exploits of Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling) Through his short career in the Majors, he has shown good control and consistency. With his stuff, Roy has the chance be the mainstay of the Houston staff for many years to come.
Not bad for a 24-year-old...
