Who is this guy? In short, Corey Patterson has been the most talked-about player in baseball the past three seasons.The reason for all the commotion? Corey is a 5-tool talent, plain and simple. In 1999, his first season in professional baseball, Corey lit up Midwest League pitchers with a .320 batting average, 17 triples, 20 homers, and 33 stolen bases. There was talk that he might get a September call-up in 2000, while he would still be 21 years old...but that talk faded a bit as he made the jump to Double-A West Tenn first, where he stuggled to hit more experienced pitchers. The skills was there; the speed was there; all that Corey needed was more time; and with his talent, he didn't need much. With the 2001 season progressing, Chicago Cubs brass thought that the future was now...and brought Patterson up to play everyday centerfield at Wrigley. Now, with Corey mining the outfield, pitchers are a little more able to concentrate on pitching. Not to mention that Corey's offensive skills are coming around. Corey has shown the ability to hit for average, collect walks, and steal bases...all from the leadoff spot, and all at the age of 22. Now, if only the rest of the team can come around to match his output...the Cubs might be a team with which to contend.
