Who is this guy? Alex was the #1 prospect for the New York Mets from about 1998 through the 2001 season. He was signed in 1995, at the age of 16, out of Venezuala. He showed skills in his first two years, but really busted out in 1998, when he batted .310, with 27 HR's, 91 RBI's, and 49 SB's. He missed most of 1999 after tearing his labrum...but came back in 2000, batting .288, with 7 3B's, 16 homers, and 24 SB's for Double-A Binghamton. After 2 callups to the Bigs in 2001, Alex's luck with the Mets finally ran out, as his track record for injuries took their toll on the Mets' patience, and he was dealt to the Cleveland Indians. The fact that he was traded for Roberto Alomar, one of the best second basemen to have ever played the game, doesn't hurt his reputation.. He has all the ability, and is a legitimate 5-tool talent when healthy. If the past is any indication, (he's only 23 years old, and already has 7 years of experience) Alex will be ready to shine in 2003, as a member of a team rich in history, but eager to rebuild with talented youth...and Escobar fits that billing to a T!.
